While The Chives may have officially come into being during the summer of 2009, its members, multi-reedist Steven Lugerner, bassist Matthew Wohl, and percussionist Max Jaffe have been shaping their musical identities collaboratively for more than eight years in various projects. The Chives, as well as their sound, are born of the musical camaraderie that these many years of collaboration have fostered. The trio often functions as a composer's forum with each member bringing compositions to the ensemble that are subsequently reworked, sliced, manipulated, and distorted through group collaboration. However, a key element of their sound comes from improvisation and their sensibilities as improvisers. This, along with their stripped down instrumentation, often creates settings in which the psyches of the performers become fully exposed. The Chives music belies classification and could at times be considered chamber music, swing, aleatoric, or even rock, although elements of all the aforementioned are frequently evident.
A recording session in August 2009 yielded the first fruit this trio has to offer. “Arnold,” titled after the town in which the release was recorded, is available for free download.
